Still life paintings have been around for thousands of years. Initially, this technique was used to depict objects as realistically as possible. However, once photography came around, there was a transition from realism to impressionism. In the 19th century, artists like Paul Cézanne revolutionized still life by focusing on form, structure, and color rather than pure realism. Later, movements like Cubism (with Picasso and Braque) and Modernism pushed still life even further, deconstructing objects into shapes, experimenting with abstraction, and exploring the artist’s unique perspective.

Today, still life painting remains a timeless way to learn the foundations of art—composition, light, shadow, color, and storytelling—while also encouraging creativity and personal expression. We encourage the artist to recognize the power of expressing themselves with a strong foundation in basic techniques to make a painting that is uniquely theirs.
